Russian Deputy Proposes Self-Exclusion for Video Games

A new initiative in Russia aims to introduce a self-exclusion mechanism specifically for video games, designed to help individuals manage and overcome gaming addiction.

Dmitry Gusev, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Control, recently discussed with TASS the potential to expand the existing or planned self-ban systems within Russia. He advocated for extending this concept to the realm of computer games.

Gusev emphasized the growing concern over digital entertainment, stating: “Today, computer games are becoming one of the serious problems. For many, it’s already a form of addiction that is difficult to cope with on their own. Therefore, it is worth considering the possibility of introducing a self-ban in this area as well.”

According to the deputy, a self-exclusion mechanism could serve as a vital tool for people who find themselves unable to independently abstain from behaviors or substances that are detrimental to their well-being. He highlighted: “For addictions like gambling, alcohol, or other dependencies — the state should give [a person] a tool to protect himself. Self-ban is precisely such a mechanism.”

While the proposal for a “self-ban on games” has been put forward, the specific methods for its implementation are yet to be clarified.

For reference, the upcoming self-exclusion system for gambling in Russia is set to operate as follows: individuals who voluntarily register for self-exclusion will be prohibited by gambling organizers from participating in games, placing bets, or entering casinos and slot machine halls. These restrictions will also encompass advertising, preventing casinos, bookmakers, and related companies from sending promotional materials to those on the self-exclusion list.
