Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of Take-Two Interactive, has voiced considerable skepticism regarding the potential of AI tools, such as Google’s Project Genie, to develop blockbuster games on par with titles like Grand Theft Auto VI. In an interview with The Game Business, Zelnick branded the notion of generating a hit game capable of captivating millions of players worldwide with a mere button press as “laughable.”
He emphasized that while game development tools have been available for many years, leading to the release of thousands of projects annually, genuine smash hits almost invariably originate from large, established studios rather than independent developers.
“The idea that you can push a button and get a hit that attracts millions of players around the world is simply laughable. It has never happened in the entertainment industry.”

Zelnick drew a parallel with AI music services, noting that although they can produce professionally sounding compositions, listeners are “unlikely to want to listen to them more than once.” Ultimately, he believes such advanced technologies will not level the playing field for small indie studios against major publishers, asserting that the fundamental challenges of creating widely successful entertainment remain unchanged.
